Wildlife

My main desire with my photography is to further conservation efforts wherever I travel. Often, wildlife works more than any other evidence to capture the love and action of the people that view them. I spent the first twenty-some years of my life without ever having seen a bear or a moose or an otter. I hope that by sharing my encounters with you I will encourage you to seek out the wildlife in your area and do what you can to protect their fragile ecosystems.

Bad News Boar
A little hard to see on this small web image, but up in the tree are a bear and her cub (cub off to the left on a branch and mom far up in the branches above, just a dark blotch behind the leaves). At the base of the tree, a sow and her 3 piglets root around after treeing the bears. Coming from the back of the field is a large boar that chased the sow and her piglets off.

This was one of those fortunate moments where I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Across the water from me was a youngish looking black bear, strolling along the river's edge. He came to the water and paused, staring across. After a few moments he entered the water, swam out a ways, then got caught in the flow. Panicked, he turned and fought his way back to the shore. Again, he observed the water and the opposite shore. And again, he entered the water. This time, he angled himself across the water rather than going straight across. This time, when the water attempted to pull him under, he surged ahead. He reached the opposite shore and ran up the following hill without a backwards glance.

Prairie dogs have this way of having a whole lot of personality. Anthropomorphism and our burrow dwelling friends seem to go hand in hand. This particular prairie dog stood about with a certain air of dignity and fearlessness. And since he was living in Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota, I dubbed him Theodore. Seems a right scrappy chap, eh?
